Method
Cheeses
Temper and prepare cheeses
Remove all cheeses from refrigeration 30–60 minutes before serving so they come to room temperature (this improves flavor and texture). While warming, pat Brie dry and score a shallow cross on top for easier portioning. Slice the manchego into thin wedges. Cut the cheddar into bite-size cubes or slices. Crumble or leave a small wedge of blue cheese and place on the board with a cheese knife.
Arrange cheeses with visual separation so each one is easy to access. Leave whole pieces for soft cheeses (Brie) and pre-slice firmer cheeses to encourage tasting.
Cured meats (optional)
Fold or roll slices of prosciutto and soppressata into loose ribbons or cones. Arrange near the harder cheeses and crackers so guests can pair meats and cheese easily.
Bread & crackers
Fresh vegetables & fruit
Wash and dry all produce. Slice cucumbers and quarter figs or apples. Trim carrots into sticks and halve radishes. Arrange vegetables and fruit in small clusters around the board to create color contrasts and bite-sized pairings for cheese and dips.
Pickles & olives
Drain olives and cornichons well. Transfer to small bowls or ramekins and place on the board to contain briny juices. Position near blue cheese and meats where saltiness complements fattier items.
Dips & spreads
Garnishes & extras
Scatter mixed nuts in a few small piles, tuck fresh herb sprigs between items for aroma and color. Lightly season sliced apples or figs with a tiny pinch of flaky sea salt and a crack of black pepper to bring out flavor. Place cheese knives, small spoons for dips, and toothpicks nearby.
Assembling the display
Choose a large wooden board or platter as your base. Start by placing bowls (for olives, dips) to anchor the layout. Arrange the cheeses with space between them, then add meats, crackers, and bread around cheeses. Fill remaining gaps with fruit, vegetables, nuts, and herbs to create an abundant, balanced look. Keep more delicate items (herbs, soft cheeses) away from direct sun or heat sources. Replenish items as guests graze.
Serve at room temperature with serving utensils (cheese knives, small spoons, spreaders) and label cheeses if desired.
