Method
Cocktail
Prepare glass
Chill an old-fashioned glass briefly by filling it with ice and set aside while you build the cocktail to keep the drink properly chilled.
Mix ingredients
In a mixing glass, add 2 oz Jameson Black Barrel, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 0.5 oz amaro, 0.25 oz simple syrup, 2 dashes orange bitters, and 1 dash Angostura bitters.
Stir
Fill the mixing glass with plenty of ice and stir gently for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full strokes) until well chilled and properly diluted (roughly 20–25% dilution from the ice).
Prepare serving glass
Discard the ice from the chilled old-fashioned glass. Place a large clear ice cube (or several large cubes) into the glass.
Strain
Double-strain the cocktail from the mixing glass into the prepared old-fashioned glass over the large ice cube to ensure a clean, silky drink.
Garnish and finish
Express the oils of an orange twist over the surface of the cocktail by holding the twist over the glass and giving it a sharp squeeze, then run the peel around the rim and drop it into the drink as garnish.
Serve
Serve immediately. Recommend pairing with light bar snacks or enjoying slowly to appreciate the whiskey’s toasted-oak and vanilla notes balanced by sweet vermouth and amaro.
