Method
Cocktail
Chill glass
Place a martini/cocktail glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice and cold water while you prepare the drink to ensure it is well chilled.
Measure and combine
Into a cocktail shaker add 2 oz vodka, 0.5 oz triple sec, 0.5 oz Cointreau, 1 oz cranberry juice, and 0.5 oz fresh lime juice. If you prefer a slightly sweeter Cosmopolitan, add 0.25 tsp simple syrup.
Add ice and shake
Fill the shaker with ice (about 1 cup). Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds until the shaker feels very cold to the touch and the exterior is frosted.
Strain
Discard the ice/water from the chilled glass if used. Double-strain the shaken cocktail into the chilled martini/cocktail glass using a Hawthorne strainer and, if available, a fine mesh strainer to catch small ice shards and pulp.
Garnish and serve
Express the oils from a lime twist over the surface of the cocktail by holding the twist over the glass and giving it a quick twist, then drop it in (or use a lime wedge on the rim). Serve immediately.
