Milk Preparation

Method

Milk Preparation

  1. 1

    Check and chill

Verify the milk is fresh by checking the smell and use-by date. If using refrigerated milk, keep it cold until ready to serve. Measure 4 cups of whole milk and pour into a clean pitcher or container.

  2. 2

Optional dilution: If you prefer a lighter milk, stir in up to 1/2 to 1 cup of filtered water. Adjust quantity in the ingredients list as desired. Stir gently to combine.

  3. 3

Salt: If using salt to enhance flavor (common in some recipes), add up to 1/8–1/4 teaspoon per cup of milk (total up to 1 teaspoon for 4 cups). Stir until dissolved.

Heating (optional - warm milk)

  1. 4

    Warm milk on stovetop

Pour measured milk into a small saucepan. Warm over low to medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the milk reaches desired warmth (about 120–140°F / 49–60°C). Do not boil; remove from heat before steaming or simmering begins. This should take about 5–8 minutes for 4 cups.

  2. 5

    Microwave method

Pour milk into a microwave-safe container and heat on medium power in 30–45 second intervals, stirring between intervals, until warm to touch. Total time will vary by microwave but typically 1–2 minutes for 1–2 cups; for 4 cups heat in stages to avoid scalding.

Flavoring / Serving (optional)

  1. 6

    Sweetened milk

If sweetening, dissolve 2 tablespoons honey or sugar and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla into warm or cold milk. Stir thoroughly until fully dissolved. Taste and adjust to preference.

  2. 7

    Chocolate milk

For chocolate milk, in a small bowl mix 2 tablespoons cocoa powder with 1–2 tablespoons of warm milk to form a smooth paste. Add the paste to the remaining milk and whisk thoroughly until fully incorporated. Sweeten to taste with honey or sugar and optionally add 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.

  3. 8

Serve: Pour milk into glasses. Serve chilled over ice for cold milk, or in mugs for warm milk. Keep any unused milk refrigerated and consume within 2–3 days of opening or by the product's use-by date.
