Cold Brew Concentrate

Method

Cold Brew Concentrate

  1. 1

    Combine coffee and water

Place 1 cup coarsely ground coffee in a large jar or pitcher. Pour 4 cups cold filtered water evenly over the grounds. Stir gently to make sure all grounds are saturated.

  2. 2

    Steep

Cover the jar or pitcher and steep at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 12 to 18 hours. Longer steep times (up to 18 hours) yield a stronger, more concentrated brew.

  3. 3

    Strain

After steeping, strain the coffee through a fine-mesh sieve lined with cheesecloth or a coffee filter (or use a coffee sock or French press). Pour the strained concentrate into a clean container. Discard the grounds.

  4. 4

    Dilute and store

If the concentrate is very strong, you can dilute it 1:1 with filtered water before storing. Store cold brew concentrate in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

Iced Coffee Assembly

  1. 5

    Prepare glass

Fill a tall glass with about 1 cup of ice cubes.

  2. 6

    Measure coffee and water/milk

Pour 1 cup cold brew concentrate into the glass over the ice. Add 1 cup cold water or milk (adjust ratio to taste for strength and creaminess). For a ready-to-drink strength, start with equal parts concentrate and liquid, then adjust.

  3. 7

    Sweeten and flavor

Stir in 2 tablespoons simple syrup (or preferred sweetener) and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract or flavored syrup if using. If using granulated sugar, dissolve it first in a small amount of warm water or use simple syrup so it blends without grit.

  4. 8

    Add creaminess (optional)

Float or stir in 2 tablespoons milk, cream, or non-dairy creamer for a richer texture. Adjust amount to taste.

  5. 9

    Serve

Stir all components until combined and chilled. Taste and adjust sweetness, milk, or dilution as desired. Serve immediately with a straw or reusable stirrer.

  6. 10

    Make ahead (optional)

For multiple servings, scale ingredients proportionally and keep cold brew concentrate refrigerated. Assemble individual glasses when ready, or premix concentrate with water/milk in a pitcher and store for up to 24 hours.
