Chocolate Milk

Method

Chocolate Milk

  1. 1

    Make chocolate paste

Place the unsweetened cocoa powder and granulated sugar in a small bowl or measuring cup. Add the hot water (about 2 tablespoons) and stir vigorously until you form a smooth, thick paste with no lumps. The hot water helps dissolve the cocoa and sugar for an even chocolate flavor.

  2. 2

    Combine with milk

Pour 2 cups of cold whole milk into a pitcher or large glass. Add the chocolate paste to the milk.

  3. 3

    Add flavor

Stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. The salt brightens the chocolate flavor.

  4. 4

    Mix thoroughly

Whisk vigorously for 20–30 seconds (or use a small hand-held milk frother or immersion blender for 5–10 seconds) until the chocolate is fully incorporated and the milk looks smooth and slightly frothy. Taste and adjust sweetness: add up to 1 additional teaspoon sugar if you prefer sweeter chocolate milk.

  5. 5

    Serve

Pour the chocolate milk into a serving glass. If desired, sprinkle chocolate shavings or a teaspoon of mini chocolate chips on top for garnish. Serve immediately chilled over ice if you like it extra cold.

  6. 6

    Storage

Store any leftover chocolate milk in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Stir or shake before serving, as separation may occur.
