Cold Brew Concentrate

Method

Cold Brew Concentrate

  1. 1

    Combine coffee and water

In a clean 1‑liter (or larger) jar or pitcher, add 1 cup coarsely ground coffee. Pour 4 cups cold, filtered water evenly over the grounds to fully saturate them.

  2. 2

    Stir to bloom

Stir gently with a long spoon for 10–20 seconds to ensure all grounds are wet and there are no dry pockets.

  3. 3

    Steep

Cover the jar or pitcher with a lid or plastic wrap. Let steep at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 16–20 hours (16 hours gives milder extraction; up to 20 hours gives fuller body).

  4. 4

    Strain

After steeping, strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve lined with a coffee filter, double layer of cheesecloth, or nut-milk bag into a clean container. Pour slowly to avoid disturbing the grounds; if using a sieve, strain twice for clarity.

  5. 5

    Store

Transfer the filtered cold brew concentrate to a sealed bottle or jar and refrigerate. Concentrate will keep for up to 10 days; best within 5 days.

To Serve (per glass)

  1. 6

Fill a glass with 1 cup of ice.

  2. 7

Pour 1/2 cup cold brew concentrate over the ice.

  3. 8

Top with 1/2 cup cold water or milk (use milk for a creamier drink). Stir to combine.

  4. 9

Taste and add sweetener if desired: about 1 teaspoon simple syrup, or 1 teaspoon honey (stir until dissolved). Adjust to taste.

  5. 10

Serve immediately. For variations: swap the water for equal parts coconut, oat, or almond milk; add a splash of vanilla or a pinch of cinnamon; or make a latte by heating the milk and pouring over the concentrate instead of cold.
