Ensure ice and rocks glasses are available if someone prefers whiskey with large ice cubes.

Provide accoutrements

Serve each whiskey neat at room temperature in its labeled tasting glass. Encourage guests to look at the color, swirl gently to release aromas, then nose the whiskey with short sniffs to identify notes (vanilla, caramel, spice, fruit, oak).

Neat tasting

Taste a small sip and let it coat the tongue. Note initial flavors, mid-palate development, and finish. Between samples, cleanse the palate with a plain cracker and a sip of water.

Palate technique

Provide the dropper bottle of filtered water so tasters can add 1–3 drops to their glass to open the aroma and flavor. Advise starting with one drop, swirling, nosing, then adding more if needed. Alternatively, provide a large ice cube to cool and slightly dilute for those who prefer.

Collect used crackers and dispose. Return opened bottles to a cool, dark place upright. Record tasting notes and any bottle preferences to guide future purchases or larger pours. Top up decanters if planning a second round, keeping pours to 30–45 ml per sample to maintain responsible alcohol service.
