Base & Wine

Citrus & Sweetener

Method

Base & Wine

1

Combine alcoholic base

In a large (2–3 quart) pitcher or bowl, pour 1.5 liters of dry red wine, 1/4 cup orange liqueur and 1/2 cup brandy. Stir gently to combine.

Citrus & Sweetener

2

Dissolve sugar and add juices

Add 1/4 cup granulated sugar to the wine mixture, then pour in 1/2 cup fresh orange juice and 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice. Stir briskly until the sugar dissolves completely (about 1–2 minutes). Taste and adjust sweetness: add up to 1–2 tablespoons more sugar if desired.

Fruit (for maceration + garnish)

3

Prepare fruit

Thinly slice 2 oranges and 1 lemon. Core and dice 1 green apple into 1/2-inch cubes. Hull and halve 1 cup strawberries.

4

Macerate fruit

Add all prepared fruit to the wine mixture, stir to submerge the fruit, then cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours and up to 24 hours. For best flavor, macerate 8–12 hours overnight so the fruit releases juices and absorbs alcohol.

Carbonation & Finish

5

Chill and finish

When ready to serve, taste the sangria and adjust balance with a splash more lemon or a teaspoon of sugar if needed. Add 3 cups chilled club soda or sparkling water to the pitcher and stir gently to combine to preserve bubbles.

6

Serve

Fill glasses with ice (to taste). Using a slotted spoon, distribute fruit into each glass and pour sangria over the ice, leaving some fruit behind in the pitcher for later servings. Garnish each glass with an orange peel twist and a sprig of fresh mint if using.

7

Storage

Leftover sangria (without club soda) keeps covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Add fresh club soda just before serving to retain carbonation. Stir gently before pouring.
