Cheeseburgers

Toppings & Condiments

Optional (for serving)

Method

Cheeseburgers

1

Form patties

Place the 1 lb ground beef in a bowl. Add 1 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp black pepper, and 1/4 tsp garlic powder. Gently mix with your hands just until combined—do not overwork. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions (about 4 oz each) and shape each into a flat round patty slightly wider than the buns, about 3/4 inch thick. Make a shallow dimple in the center of each patty with your thumb to reduce puffing while cooking.

2

Preheat pan

Heat a large nonstick or cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat for 1–2 minutes until hot. If using a stovetop griddle, preheat to medium-high. (Alternatively, you can use a grill.)

3

Cook patties

Add the patties to the hot skillet with a light spray of oil if needed. Cook for about 3 minutes on the first side without moving them to develop a crust. Flip and cook an additional 2–3 minutes for a medium doneness appropriate for kids (adjust time if you prefer more done).

4

Add cheese

When patties are nearly done (about 30–45 seconds before removing), place one mild cheddar slice on each patty. Cover the pan briefly with a lid or a large bowl for 30–45 seconds to help the cheese melt.

5

Butter buns

While the cheese melts, spread the softened 1 tbs butter evenly on the cut sides of the 4 mini hamburger buns. Place buns, butter-side down, in the same skillet for 20–30 seconds until lightly toasted and golden. Remove buns and set aside.

Toppings & Assembly

6

Prepare produce: Slice the tomato into thin rounds (about 4 slices). Tear or trim lettuce into 4 leaves appropriate for the bun size. Have 2 pickle slices per burger ready.

7

Assemble burgers: Spread about 1 tablespoon of ketchup and 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise on the bottom halves of each toasted bun (adjust to taste). Place a lettuce leaf on the bottom bun, then top with the cheeseburger patty. Add 2 pickle slices and 1 tomato slice to each. Cap with the top bun.

8

Serve: Serve the kids cheeseburgers warm with optional frozen oven fries or chips. If serving fries, cook them according to package directions (typically bake at 425°F/220°C for 12–18 minutes) and serve alongside.
