Method
Board base & accoutrements
- 1
prepare board
Select a large clean wooden board or slate. Place it on a stable surface near serving area. If serving outdoors, keep covered until plating to avoid insects/dust.
- 2
arrange crackers and bread
Fan crackers in small stacks around the perimeter of the board. Arrange sliced baguette in overlapping rows or stacks for easy grabbing.
- 3
- 4
- 5
add fruit
Rinse grapes or fruit, pat dry, and arrange in small clusters on the board to add color and acidity.
Cheeses
- 6
prepare soft cheese
Place the brie or camembert wheel whole on the board. For a warm, gooey option, score the top and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 10–12 minutes until just soft (optional).
- 7
slice firm cheeses
Cut the cheddar or manchego into bite-size slices or small wedges. Fan the slices near one corner of the board for easy choice.
- 8
prepare goat cheese & blue
Crumble or slice the goat cheese log into rounds or quenelles (using a spoon). Place blue cheese in a small pile or wedge with a cheese knife. Ensure each cheese has its own serving knife or spreader.
Cured meats
- 9
arrange prosciutto
Gently fold prosciutto slices into loose rosettes or drape them over small cones made from slices to create height. Cluster these near the soft cheese to pair nicely with bread.
- 10
arrange salami and coppa
Layer soppressata or salami slices in slightly overlapping rows or make loose accordion folds. Place coppa in a separate cluster to give visual variety and easy access.
- 11
create meat towers
For a tower effect, stack a small pile of folded slices on a central spot, alternating types to build a short, stable tower about 3–4 inches high. Use toothpicks if needed to stabilize (remove before eating).
Fresh garnishes & finishing
- 12
add herbs and final touches
Tuck rosemary and thyme sprigs between cheese and meat clusters for aroma and visual height. Scatter edible flowers or microgreens sparingly for color.
- 13
balance and taste
Step back and look for empty spaces. Fill gaps with extra crackers, fruit, or nuts so the board looks abundant. Drizzle a little honey over the brie and near goat cheese if desired.
- 14
serve
Provide small plates, napkins, cheese knives, toothpicks, and spreaders. Keep the board at room temperature (cheeses are best served at room temp) and replenish items as they get low.
