Preparation Instructions
Prepare the Dough
In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk and let it sit until frothy, about 5 minutes. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix until a dough forms.
Knead the Dough
Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1-2 hours.
Shape the Cake
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a rectangle. Place the plastic baby or toy in the center. Roll the dough tightly to form a log, then shape it into a ring and seal the ends.
Second Rise
Place the ring on a greased baking sheet, cover it, and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes.
Bake the Cake
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the King Cake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Allow it to cool before frosting.
