Cocktail
If using a sugar cube
Method
If using simple syrup
Build the cocktail
Place 1/2 tsp simple syrup in an Old Fashioned (rocks) glass. Add 2 dashes Angostura bitters and 1 dash orange bitters if using. Add 2 oz rye whiskey (or bourbon). Add a large ice cube (or several cubes) and gently stir 20–30 seconds to chill and dilute slightly.
Express the orange oil: hold a piece of orange peel over the glass skin-side down about 2–3 inches above the surface. Give the peel a firm squeeze or twist so the oils spray onto the drink, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass. Optionally garnish with a maraschino cherry.
Serve immediately. Estimated drink temperature and dilution should be balanced after stirring; enjoy.
If using a sugar cube
Muddle sugar and bitters
Place the sugar cube in the Old Fashioned glass. Add 2 dashes Angostura bitters and 1 dash orange bitters (if using) and 1/4 tsp water. Muddle until the sugar is mostly dissolved and forms a paste with the bitters.
Add spirit and ice
Add 2 oz rye whiskey (or bourbon) to the glass. Add a large ice cube or several ice cubes and gently stir 20–30 seconds to chill and dilute the drink slightly.
Garnish and finish
Express the orange peel over the glass to release oils, rub it on the rim, then drop peel into the drink. Optionally add a maraschino cherry. Serve immediately.
