Method
Base Spirits & Modifiers
Add 2 oz rye whiskey, 0.5 oz añejo tequila and 0.5 oz Averna (or another caramel-forward amaro) to a mixing glass or cocktail shaker.
These three elements form the backbone: rye provides spice and structure, tequila adds weight and herbal/vanilla depth from the oak, and the amaro brings bitter-sweet complexity.
Sweetener & Bittering
Add 0.25 oz demerara simple syrup to the mixing glass.
Add 2 dashes Angostura bitters and 1 dash orange bitters. These bitters round the drink and bridge citrus and spice notes.
Stir the mixture with ice for 20–30 seconds (about 15–18 full revolutions) until well-chilled and properly diluted — the drink should be slightly silky and not overly viscous.
Strain & Finish
Place a large clear ice cube or sphere into a chilled old-fashioned glass.
Double-strain (or fine-strain if using freshly cracked ice) the mixed cocktail into the glass over the large ice.
Express the orange peel over the drink: hold peel skin-side down about 3–4 inches above the glass, give it a firm twist to release oils, then rub the rim with the peel and drop it into the drink (or discard, per preference).
Garnish with one Luxardo or Amarena cherry on a pick, resting on top of the ice if desired.
