Method
Base Cake
Preheat and prepare pan
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a half-sheet or small rectangular baking pan approximately 9 x 5 inches (or a similarly slim 'half page' pan). Line the bottom with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal, and lightly grease the parchment.
Combine dry ingredients
In a medium bowl, whisk together 1.5 cups all-purpose flour, 1 cup granulated sugar, 1.5 teaspoons baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt until evenly distributed.
Wet ingredients
In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 large egg, 1/2 cup melted and slightly cooled unsalted butter, 1/2 cup whole milk, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (and the optional 1 teaspoon lemon zest and/or 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon if using). Ensure the melted butter is not so hot that it cooks the egg.
Combine batter
Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir gently with a spatula until just combined. Scrape the sides and bottom — avoid overmixing. The batter should be thick but pourable; if it seems too stiff, add 1 to 2 teaspoons of milk.
Bake
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with an offset spatula or back of a spoon. Bake in the preheated oven for 18–24 minutes, or until the top is golden and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs (not wet batter).
Ornate Glaze & Decoration
Prepare glaze
While the cake cools, prepare the glaze by sifting 1.5 cups powdered sugar into a medium bowl. Add 2 tablespoons lemon juice and 1 teaspoon milk, whisking until smooth. The glaze should be thick but pourable; add an extra 1/4 teaspoon milk if too thick or a little more powdered sugar if too thin.
Brush cake (optional)
If you want a slightly richer sheen and to lock in crumbs, lightly brush the cooled cake top with 1 tablespoon melted unsalted butter and allow it to set for 2 minutes before glazing.
Glaze the cake
Place the cooled cake on a rack over a sheet pan (to catch drips). Spoon the glaze down the center and use an offset spatula to gently spread it toward the edges, allowing some glaze to naturally drip over the sides for an ornate look. Work quickly—the glaze will begin to set within minutes.
Apply gold accents
Using a small, dry, food-safe brush, very lightly dust 1/4 teaspoon edible gold or luster dust onto the glaze in sweeping, decorative strokes. Focus on the center and a few faint flourishes along the edges for an elegant, 'skinny ornate' look. If the dust needs mixing, briefly stir a pinch into a drop of neutral oil or clear alcohol to make a paint, then brush sparingly.
Garnish
Scatter 1/2 cup fresh berries along one long edge or in small clusters for visual interest. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons toasted sliced almonds or chopped pistachios around the berries. Tuck about 6 small fresh mint leaves among the berries and nuts for color and contrast.
Set and serve
Allow the glaze to set at room temperature for 15–25 minutes until slightly firm to the touch. Slice the cake into narrow 'skinny half-page' portions (about 8–10 thin slices depending on desired width) and serve. Store leftovers covered at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerated for up to 5 days.
Optional Skinny Add-ins
If using optional ground cinnamon or lemon zest, add them to the wet ingredients step before combining with the dry ingredients so the flavors distribute evenly through the batter.
