Fountain Soda (single serving)
For making soda syrup from concentrate (small batch, optional)
Method
Fountain Soda (single serving)
Prepare glass
Select a tall glass (12–16 oz). Fill the glass about two-thirds full with ice (approximately 1 cup of ice).
Add syrup
Measure 1.5 oz (about 3 tablespoons) of your chosen soda syrup and pour it over the ice. Adjust amount to taste if desired (1–2 oz typical).
Top with carbonated water
Slowly pour 12 oz of well-chilled carbonated water down the inside of the glass to minimize foaming. Pour gently until the glass is nearly full, leaving a little headroom for stirring and garnish.
Incorporate and finish
Give the drink one or two gentle stirs with a long bar spoon to blend syrup with the carbonated water. Avoid vigorous stirring to preserve carbonation. Garnish with an optional lemon or lime wedge on the rim and/or a maraschino cherry. Serve immediately with a straw or coaster.
Notes on proportions: Classic fountain machines dispense syrup + carbonator at a fixed ratio (commonly about 5:1 or 4:1 water:syrup by volume depending on syrup strength). The recipe above approximates a commonly preferred sweetness for home use; adjust syrup quantity to taste.
For making soda syrup from concentrate (optional)
Make simple syrup base
In a small saucepan combine 2 cups granulated sugar and 1 cup water. Warm over medium heat, stirring frequently, until sugar is completely dissolved and liquid is clear. Do not boil vigorously — a brief simmer is fine. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
Blend with flavor concentrate
Stir in 8 tablespoons (1/2 cup) of your chosen flavoring concentrate or cordial into the warm simple syrup until fully combined. Taste and adjust: add more concentrate for stronger flavor or dilute with water if too intense.
Cool and store
Allow the syrup to cool to room temperature. Transfer to a clean, airtight bottle and refrigerate. Use within 2–3 weeks. For fountain-style dispensing, mix with carbonated water at approximately 4–5 parts water to 1 part syrup by volume, then adjust to taste.
