Classic Chocolate Chip Muffins (12 muffins)

Streusel Topping (optional)

Method

Classic Chocolate Chip Muffins (12 muffins)

1

Preheat and Prepare

Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Place a rack in the center of the oven. Grease a 12-cup muffin tin lightly with vegetable oil or line with paper liners.

2

Combine Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups all-purpose flour, 3.4 oz granulated sugar (about 3/4 cup + 2 tbsp), 2 teaspoons baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon fine salt until evenly distributed.

3

Mix Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk 2 large eggs until combined. Add 1 cup whole milk, 1/2 cup melted and slightly cooled unsalted butter, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth.

4

Combine Wet and Dry

Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the wet mixture. Use a rubber spatula to fold together just until combined and no large streaks of flour remain. Do not overmix; batter should be slightly lumpy.

5

Add Chocolate Chips

Fold in 1.5 cups semisweet chocolate chips evenly through the batter, leaving some chips for sprinkling on top if desired.

6

Portion Batter

Divide batter among the 12 muffin cups, filling each about 3/4 full. If using, sprinkle additional chocolate chips on top of each muffin.

7

Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for 16–20 minutes, rotating the pan once halfway through baking if your oven heats unevenly. Muffins are done when the tops are golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs (not raw batter).

8

Cool

Remove the pan to a wire rack and let muffins cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then transfer muffins to the rack to cool completely or serve warm.

Streusel Topping (optional)

9

Make Streusel

In a small bowl, combine 1/4 cup all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Add 2 tablespoons cold cubed unsalted butter and use a pastry cutter or your fingertips to rub the butter into the dry ingredients until mixture looks like coarse crumbs.

10

Top Muffins

If using streusel, sprinkle it over each muffin just before baking. The topping will crisp and brown while the muffins bake.

Optional Finish

11

Dust or Drizzle

After muffins have cooled slightly, dust with powdered sugar (about 1 teaspoon total across the batch) or drizzle with 2 tablespoons melted chocolate for a bakery-style finish. To drizzle, melt chocolate gently in a microwave in 15-second bursts, stirring between bursts until smooth, then use a spoon to drizzle over muffins.
