Place the tokkuri (sake carafe) and ochoko (sake cups) or small wine glasses in the refrigerator or freezer for 10–20 minutes before serving so they are nicely chilled. Chilled vessels keep the nigori's creamy texture refreshing.

Chill glassware and carafe

If you prefer a slightly colder or more diluted drink, prepare 4 ice cubes and thinly slice lemon or yuzu. Keep these ready at the serving station.

Prepare optional ice and garnish

Nigori sake is unfiltered and often has sediment that settles at the bottom. Gently roll the sealed 300 ml bottle between your hands or invert it a few times to re-suspend the creamy rice particles. Avoid vigorous shaking that will create excessive foam.

Gently mix the bottle

Open the bottle and slowly pour the nigori into the chilled tokkuri through a fine strainer if you want a slightly smoother consistency. If you prefer the full-texture experience, pour directly from the bottle. Aim to decant evenly so each cup receives both liquid and suspended rice particles.

Decant (optional)

For a colder, slightly lighter taste, add 1 ice cube per serving to the cups or stir a small amount of cold water (about 30 ml total) into the tokkuri, then taste and adjust. Traditionalists usually serve nigori undiluted and chilled.

Adjust temperature/dilution (optional)

Pour the sake into the chilled cups, dividing the 300 ml bottle among 3–4 cups (about 75–100 ml per serving). If desired, float a thin lemon or yuzu slice on each cup for a subtle citrus aroma.

Pour and garnish

Serve immediately while cold. Sip slowly to appreciate the sweet, creamy texture and rice-forward flavor. If leftovers remain, reseal the bottle and keep refrigerated; consume within 2–3 days for best quality, gently re-mixing before each pour.
