Oatmeal base

Method

Oatmeal base

1

Measure and combine liquids

In a small to medium saucepan, combine 1.5 cups water and 0.5 cup milk. Heat over medium until the mixture just begins to simmer (small bubbles at the edge).

2

Add oats and salt

Stir in 1 cup rolled oats and 1 tsp salt. Reduce heat to medium-low to maintain a gentle simmer.

3

Cook

Cook, stirring occasionally, for 5โ€“7 minutes until the oats have absorbed most of the liquid and reached a creamy texture. For thicker oatmeal cook toward the longer end; for thinner, add up to 2 tablespoons more milk or water.

4

Finish

Remove from heat. If using, stir in 1 tablespoon butter for extra richness. Let sit 1 minute to thicken slightly.

Assemble and serve

5

Spoon the cooked oatmeal into a serving bowl.

6

Top with 1/2 cup granola, sprinkling evenly. Add 2 tablespoons brown sugar on top or to taste; you can serve the brown sugar on the side for guests to add their preferred amount.

7

Add optional toppings: scatter 1/2 cup fresh fruit if using, and drizzle 2 tablespoons milk or cream over the bowl for extra creaminess.

8

Serve immediately while warm. Stir brown sugar into the oats if you prefer it dissolved, or leave it on top for crunchy sweet bites.
