For the juice
Wash and prepare
Rinse the oranges and mint (if using) under cold running water. Pat dry with a clean towel.
Roll oranges
On a cutting board, press each orange with the palm of your hand and roll it firmly back and forth several times to soften the fruit and release more juice.
Cut and juice
Cut each orange in half crosswise. Juice the oranges using a manual citrus juicer, reamer, or an electric citrus press until all juice is extracted. Strain the juice through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl or pitcher to remove seeds and excess pulp if you prefer a smoother texture.
Adjust sweetness and dilute
Taste the freshly squeezed juice. If it tastes very intense, stir in up to 1/4 cup (60 ml) cold water to dilute slightly — start with 2 tablespoons and add up to 1/4 cup to preference. If you prefer a sweeter juice, dissolve 1 teaspoon granulated sugar in the water before adding, or stir the sugar directly into the juice until dissolved.
Chill and serve
Add ice cubes to a pitcher or individual glasses. Pour the orange juice over the ice. Garnish each glass with a mint leaf if desired. Serve immediately for best flavor.
