Method
Preparation of serving
Chill glassware
Place tall serving glasses in the refrigerator or fill with ice and cold water for 5–10 minutes to chill while you prepare syrups and carbonated water.
Prepare garnishes: cut lime wedges and orange slices, and have maraschino cherries ready in a small dish.
Assembling sodas (per 1 serving)
Measure syrup
For each 12-ounce (about 1.5 cups) serving: measure 2 tablespoons (about 1 ounce / 30 ml) of the concentrated syrup for a standard-strength soda. Using the concentrated syrups in the ingredient list, this recipe supports cola, root beer, and orange options. If you prefer stronger flavor, increase syrup to 3 tablespoons (45 ml).
Add ice
Fill a chilled tall glass halfway with ice cubes (approximately 4–6 standard ice cubes).
Syrup into glass
Pour the measured syrup (2 tbsp / 30 ml) into the glass over the ice. If making a flavored variation (e.g., cream soda), add 1/4 tsp vanilla extract to the syrup before adding carbonated water.
Add carbonated water
Slowly pour 12 ounces (about 1.5 cups / 360 ml) of very cold carbonated water down the side of the glass to preserve effervescence. Pour gently to avoid excessive foaming; leave about 1/2 inch of headroom.
Mix gently
Use a long spoon to gently stir the soda once or twice to evenly incorporate syrup without flattening the carbonation. Do not stir vigorously.
Garnish and serve
Garnish according to flavor: cola or root beer — add a maraschino cherry; orange soda — add an orange slice; offer a lime wedge alongside for squeezing. Serve immediately with a straw.
Batch mixing (optional for multiple servings)
To prepare a pitcher for 4 servings (approx. 48 oz / 6 cups of soda): combine 8 tablespoons (1/2 cup / 120 ml) syrup with 48 ounces (about 6 cups / 1.4 L) cold carbonated water in a chilled pitcher. Stir gently once to combine. Keep the pitcher cold and use immediately. For best carbonation, avoid prolonged stirring or shaking.
If using a soda fountain dispenser, set the syrup-to-soda ratio on the machine to approximately 1:5 (syrup:water) as a starting point, then taste and adjust to preference.
Storage & notes
Keep concentrated syrups refrigerated once opened (follow manufacturer's directions). Use carbonated water immediately after chilling for best fizz. Prepared mixed soda is best consumed within 30–60 minutes; it will lose carbonation over time.
Adjust sweetness and intensity by varying syrup between 1.5–3 tablespoons per 12 oz serving depending on brand concentration and personal taste.
