Method
Cocktail
- 1
Prepare brown sugar syrup (if you don't have it)
Combine 2 parts packed dark brown sugar with 1 part water in a small saucepan. Heat gently, stirring until sugar dissolves. Cool to room temperature and refrigerate until chilled. Makes extra; store up to 2 weeks.
- 2
Chill an old-fashioned glass (or rocks glass) by placing it in the freezer or filling with ice water while you mix the cocktail.
- 3
Add bourbon, dark rum, cold-brewed coffee, chilled black tea, brown sugar syrup, fresh lemon juice, Angostura bitters, orange bitters, and a pinch of salt to a cocktail shaker filled halfway with fresh ice.
- 4
Shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds to both chill and slightly dilute the mix, combining the coffee and tea flavors with the spirits and syrup.
- 5
- 6
Strain the shaken cocktail over the large ice cube using a hawthorne or fine strainer to remove small ice chips and ensure a silky texture.
Garnish & Finish
- 7
Express the orange peel over the drink: hold peel skin-side down over the glass and give it a firm twist to release oils. Run the peel around the rim and drop it into the drink.
- 8
Optionally float three coffee beans on top for aroma and presentation.
- 9
Serve immediately. Sip and enjoy the interplay of caramelized sugar, coffee depth, smoky tea, and warm bourbon notes.
