Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare glass

Fill a highball or Collins glass with ice to chill while you build the cocktail.

  2. 2

    Combine spirits and juice

In a cocktail shaker, add 1.5 oz Ole Smoky Orange Moonshine, 1.0 oz blanco tequila, 3.0 oz fresh orange juice and a large handful of ice (about 6–8 medium cubes).

  3. 3

    Shake

Secure the shaker and shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds until well chilled and slightly frothy.

  4. 4

    Strain and serve

Dump the ice from the chilled glass if desired and fill with fresh ice. Strain the shaken mixture into the prepared glass over ice.

  5. 5

    Create the moonrise effect

Slowly drizzle 0.25 oz grenadine down the inside edge of the glass or pour it over the back of a spoon so it sinks and gradually rises through the orange mixture, creating a layered 'moonrise' effect.

  6. 6

    Garnish and finish

Garnish with an orange wheel or twist on the rim. Serve with a straw or stirrer so the guest can break the layers if desired.

Optional / Serving notes

  1. 7

For a slightly sweeter or more pronounced orange flavor, substitute 0.5 oz of the orange juice with fresh squeezed pineapple or add 0.25 oz simple syrup to taste.

  2. 8

To pre-batch for a party, mix the moonshine, tequila and orange juice in a pitcher (3 parts juice to 1.5 parts moonshine to 1 part tequila), keep chilled, and pour over ice, finishing each glass with 0.25 oz grenadine.
