Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

Chill a highball or hurricane glass by filling it with ice water while you prepare the drink (optional).

  2. 2

    Add ice and base spirit

Discard the ice water from the serving glass and fill the glass about two-thirds full with fresh ice. Pour 2 oz citrus vodka into a cocktail shaker over ice.

  3. 3

    Add sour mix and shake

Add 2 oz sour mix to the shaker with the vodka. Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds to chill and slightly dilute the mixture.

  4. 4

    Pour base layer

Strain the vodka + sour mix into the prepared serving glass over the fresh ice, leaving room for additional layers (about 1 inch at top).

  5. 5

    Float melon liqueur

Slowly pour 1 oz melon liqueur over the back of a spoon held just above the surface of the drink so it gently floats on top of the vodka/sour layer, creating a green middle layer.

  6. 6

    Float blue curaçao

Using the same spoon-floating technique, very slowly add 1 oz blue curaçao so it rests on or slightly mixes with the melon layer to create a blue-green gradient. Pouring rate should be slow to preserve layers.

  7. 7

    Add grenadine sink

Slowly drizzle 0.5 oz grenadine down the inside of the glass. Because grenadine is denser, it will sink toward the bottom and create a red base and streaks through the drink — contributing to the layered, colorful look.

  8. 8

    Final settle

Allow the drink to sit undisturbed for 10–20 seconds so the layers settle. If desired, gently tilt the glass to adjust layering but avoid stirring.

Garnish & Serve

  1. 9

Garnish the rim with an orange wheel and drop a maraschino cherry into the drink or skewer both on a pick and rest across the rim.

  2. 10

    Serve

Serve immediately with a straw (placed to the side so the drinker can enjoy the layers before mixing). Advise the drinker they may stir to combine flavors if they prefer a uniform taste.
