Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare glass and mint

Place a rocks glass or short tumbler in the freezer briefly or fill with ice to chill while you prepare the cocktail. Remove the glass ice just before serving. Reserve 2 fresh mint leaves for garnish.

  2. 2

    Muddle

In a mixing glass or cocktail shaker, add the fresh mint leaves (about 6 leaves), fresh lemon juice (0.75 oz), and simple syrup (0.75 oz). Gently muddle the mint with a muddler or the back of a spoon 6–8 times—just enough to release the oils and aroma without shredding the leaves.

  3. 3

    Add whiskey and bitters

Add the Crown Royal whiskey (2 oz) to the muddled mixture. If using, add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters. Add a handful of ice (enough to fill the shaker about halfway).

  4. 4

    Shake

Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for about 10–12 seconds until the outside of the shaker is cold and the contents are well mixed and slightly frothy from the mint and citrus.

  5. 5

    Prepare serving glass

Discard any chilling ice from the serving glass if you used it to chill. Fill the glass with crushed ice to the top (about 1 cup).

  6. 6

    Strain and assemble

Double-strain the shaken cocktail into the prepared glass over the crushed ice. Use a fine mesh strainer along with the shaker strainer to catch small mint bits and ice shards for a cleaner pour.

  7. 7

    Garnish and serve

Gently slap the reserved mint leaves between your palms to release their aroma and place them on top of the crushed ice. Add a lemon wedge or wheel to the rim or float it on top. Optionally, top with an extra light spritz of bitters. Serve with a short straw and enjoy immediately.
