Tea and Water

Serving

Method

Preparing Water

1

Heat water

Fill a kettle or pot with 4 cups (about 1 liter) of fresh cold water and heat to the appropriate temperature for the chosen tea: 212°F (100°C) for black and herbal teas, 190–200°F (88–93°C) for oolong, 175–185°F (80–85°C) for green teas, and 205°F (96°C) for rooibos. If using an electric kettle with temperature settings, select the correct temperature. If unsure, bring to a full boil and let sit 30–60 seconds for most non-black teas.

Steeping Tea

2

Measure tea bag

Place one tea bag per cup (about 1 tea bag per 8 oz / 240 ml). For a 4-cup pot, use 4 tea bags. Adjust count for strength preference.

3

Pour water

Pour the heated water directly over the tea bags placed in a teapot or individual cups. Pouring over the bags helps extract flavor evenly.

4

Steep

Steep for the recommended time depending on tea type: black 3–5 minutes, green 2–3 minutes, oolong 3–5 minutes, herbal 5–7 minutes, rooibos 5–7 minutes. For stronger tea, steep toward the longer end, but avoid over-steeping green tea to prevent bitterness.

5

Remove bags

Remove and discard tea bags after steeping. Gently squeeze the bag against the side of the pot or cup only if you want a bit more strength (note: squeezing can release bitter tannins with some teas).

Customize and Serve

6

Sweeten or add milk

Offer sugar, honey or sweetener to taste. For milky teas (such as many black teas), add milk a splash at a time until desired color/taste is reached (about 1–2 tablespoons per cup).

7

Citrus and herbs

If serving citrus teas or herbal blends that pair with lemon, add a lemon slice per cup. Add fresh mint leaves to mint-friendly blends or as a garnish.

8

Unlimited refills (service note)

Keep hot water available in a kettle or on a warming plate for refills. Replace spent tea bags with fresh ones for each refill or provide new hot water and allow guests to steep new bags to maintain flavor. Label available flavors and recommend steep times for each.

9

Serve

Pour tea into cups, place optional additions on the side (sugar, honey, milk, lemon, mint) and serve hot. Dispose of used tea bags and rinse teapot between different tea types to avoid flavor transfer.
