1

Prepare glass and dissolve sugar

Place a sugar cube in an old-fashioned (rocks) glass. Add the Angostura bitters directly onto the sugar cube (about 3 dashes). Add 1 teaspoon of water. Using a muddler or the back of a spoon, press and grind the sugar cube with the bitters until mostly dissolved and a paste forms. If using simple or demerara syrup instead of a cube, add 1/4 oz syrup and skip muddling.

2

Add whisky

Add 2 oz Woodford Reserve bourbon to the glass and stir briefly (3–5 gentle turns) to combine with the sugar-bitters mixture.

3

Add ice and finish stirring

Add one large ice cube or ice sphere to the glass. Stir gently but thoroughly for 15–20 seconds (about 10–15 strokes) to chill and slightly dilute the drink, integrating flavors.

4

Garnish and serve

Express the orange peel over the glass by holding it skin-side down and giving it a sharp twist to spray the oils onto the drink. Rub the peel around the rim, then drop it into the glass as garnish. Serve immediately.
