Blackberry-Basil Purée

Method

Blackberry-Basil Purée

1

Make purée

Combine fresh blackberries, packed basil leaves, granulated sugar, lemon juice and water in a blender or small food processor. Pulse until mostly smooth, about 10–15 seconds. Stop and scrape down sides once to ensure even consistency.

2

Strain (optional for smoother texture)

Place a fine mesh strainer over a bowl and press the purée through with the back of a spoon to remove seeds and large bits. You should yield roughly 3–4 ounces (about 1/3–1/2 cup) of purée. Refrigerate until chilled if not using immediately.

Cocktail Assembly

3

Prep glass

Fill a rocks glass or highball with ice (about 1 cup). If desired, chill the glass beforehand.

4

Build cocktail

In a cocktail shaker, add 1.5 oz blackberry-basil purée, 2 oz Bulleit Rye, and 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice. Fill the shaker halfway with ice and shake vigorously for 8–10 seconds until well-chilled.

5

Strain and top

Double-strain the shaken mix into the prepared glass over fresh ice (to remove any remaining seeds/herb bits). Top gently with 2.5 oz Sprite, stirring once gently with a bar spoon to integrate without flattening the soda.

6

Garnish and serve

Garnish with a fresh basil sprig and two blackberries (skewered or floated). Optionally slap the basil between your palms before garnishing to release aroma. Serve immediately.
