Beverage

1

Prepare espresso

Brew a double shot of espresso (about 2 fl oz). Use fresh, finely ground coffee and an espresso machine or a strong concentrated espresso-style extraction method (moka pot or Aeropress with fine grind and short steep) to yield approximately 2 oz. If you prefer a milder strength, brew a lungo (slightly larger volume).

2

Fill glass with ice

Fill a 12–16 oz glass with about 1 cup of fresh ice cubes (enough to cool the drink quickly and avoid excessive dilution).

3

Add cold water

Pour 6 fl oz of cold water into the ice-filled glass. Use filtered water for best taste. Adjust water to taste — more water for a milder Americano, less for stronger.

4

Combine espresso and water

Pour the hot espresso slowly over the ice and cold water. Pouring over the ice chills the espresso quickly and preserves crema texture (it will mostly dissipate). Stir gently once with a spoon to combine. The iced americano should be immediately cold and slightly diluted from the melting ice.

Optional additions

5

Sweeten (optional)

If you want sweetness, add 1 teaspoon of simple syrup to the glass and stir until evenly distributed. Simple syrup integrates better than granulated sugar in cold drinks.

6

Add dairy or non-dairy (optional)

If you prefer coffee with milk or cream, add about 1 tablespoon of milk, cream, or a non-dairy alternative and stir gently. Adjust amount to taste.

7

Garnish (optional)

Twist a strip of lemon or orange peel over the drink to express oils, then drop it in or rest it on the rim for a bright aromatic note.
