Juice the oranges
Roll 2–3 oranges on the counter to loosen juice. Cut in half and use a citrus juicer or reamer to extract fresh orange juice until you have about 4 oz (approx. 1/2 cup) per cocktail. Strain through a fine mesh sieve into a measuring cup to remove pulp and seeds if you prefer a smoother drink.
Build the drink
Fill a highball or Collins glass with ice cubes (about 1 cup). Pour 2 oz vodka over the ice, then add 4 oz fresh orange juice. If desired, add 1/4 tsp simple syrup and gently stir once to combine. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
Garnish and serve
Garnish with an orange wheel or a twist on the rim. Serve immediately with a straw or stirrer.
Optional Batch (per 1 litre)
Combine 750 ml fresh orange juice and 250 ml vodka in a pitcher. Chill the mixture in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. When ready to serve, fill glasses with ice, pour the chilled mixture over ice, garnish with orange wheels, and serve immediately.
