OLD FASHIONED

The nose is mellow spice, rich fruit, hints of sweet oak & caramel. The palate is mellow, ripened red berries, dried spice, well-balanced, rich. The finish is soft, smooth & pleasantly long.

Place a mixing glass or chilled short mixing vessel on your work surface. Add 2 oz Four Roses Small Batch, 0.25 oz simple syrup, 2 dashes Angostura bitters and 1 dash orange bitters into the mixing glass.

Build and stir

Fill the mixing glass with plenty of fresh ice (large cubes if available). Stir gently for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full turns) until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted — the glass should feel cold to the touch and the liquid slightly viscous.

Add ice and chill

Place a single large ice cube or sphere into a chilled old-fashioned glass. Strain the stirred cocktail over the large ice cube using a Hawthorne strainer or julep strainer into the glass.

Prepare glass and serve

Express the orange peel over the surface of the cocktail: hold the peel with the outside facing down about 3–4 inches above the drink and give it a firm quick squeeze to release the oils, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass.

Optionally, add a Luxardo or brandied cherry on a pick and rest it atop or beside the ice. Serve immediately.
