Classic Vodka Martini

Dirty Martini

Gibson Martini

Vesper Martini

Espresso Martini (select martini variation)

Method

Classic Vodka Martini

1

Chill glass

Place a martini glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes or fill with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to chill it.

2

Add vodka and dry vermouth to a mixing glass filled with plenty of ice.

3

Stir gently for 20–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted. (Stirring preserves clarity; shake only if you prefer a slightly more aerated texture.)

4

Dump ice or water from the chilled martini glass and strain the mixture into the glass using a julep or fine strainer.

5

Express a lemon twist over the drink to release oils and either drop it in or serve with a green olive on a pick.

Dirty Martini

6

Chill the martini glass as above.

7

In a mixing glass filled with ice, combine vodka, dry vermouth, and olive brine.

8

Stir for 20–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted. Taste and add up to 0.25 oz more olive brine if you prefer extra 'dirt.'

9

Strain into the chilled martini glass and garnish with two green olives on a pick.

Gibson Martini

10

Chill a martini glass as above.

11

Add gin and dry vermouth to a mixing glass with ice.

12

Stir gently 20–30 seconds until very cold and slightly diluted.

13

Strain into the chilled glass and garnish with a cocktail onion skewered on a pick. For a slightly drier Gibson, reduce vermouth to 0.25 oz.

Vesper Martini

14

Chill a martini or coupe glass.

15

In a mixing glass filled with ice, combine gin, vodka, and Lillet blanc (or dry vermouth).

16

Stir briskly for about 20 seconds until well chilled. Traditionally, the Vesper may be shaken very briefly; if so, use a shaker and strain.

17

Strain into the chilled glass and garnish with a long lemon peel, expressing oils over the surface first.

Espresso Martini (select martini variation)

18

Brew a fresh shot of espresso and allow it to cool slightly (room temperature is ideal). If you don't have espresso, use very strong coffee and reduce to 1 oz.

19

Fill a shaker with ice. Add vodka, cooled espresso, coffee liqueur, and simple syrup.

20

Shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds to create a light foam on top and thoroughly chill the drink.

21

Double-strain into a chilled martini or coupe glass to remove ice shards and crema debris.

22

Garnish with three coffee beans arranged on top.
