Method
Boulevardier
Chill glass
Place a rocks glass or coupe in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to chill the glass.
Combine ingredients
In a mixing glass or cocktail shaker (without shaking), add 2 oz Wild Turkey 101, 1 oz Campari, 1 oz sweet vermouth, and 2 dashes chocolate bitters.
Add ice and stir
Add large ice cubes to the mixing glass until near full. Stir gently but steadily for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 full turns) until the mixture is well chilled and properly diluted—this both chills and softens the high-proof bourbon.
Prepare glass and strain
Discard the ice or water from your chilled serving glass. Using a julep or Hawthorne strainer, strain the cocktail from the mixing glass into the chilled rocks glass over one large clear ice cube or into the chilled coupe if served up.
Garnish
Express the oils from one orange peel by holding it over the drink and giving it a quick twist, then gently rub the peel’s rim on the glass and drop the peel into the drink (or rest on the rim) as garnish.
Serve
Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the balance of robust bourbon, bitter Campari, and the sweet herbal vermouth lifted by a hint of chocolate bitters.
