California Roll Ingredients

Preparation

Directions for Making California Roll

1. Prepare the Sushi Rice

Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Combine the rice and water in a rice cooker and cook according to the manufacturer's instructions. Once cooked, let it cool slightly.

2. Season the Rice

In a small bowl, mix the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved. Gently fold this mixture into the cooled rice, being careful not to mash the grains.

3. Prepare the Fillings

Slice the avocado and cucumber into thin strips. Shred the imitation crab meat if not already shredded.

4. Assemble the Rolls

Place a bamboo sushi mat on a flat surface. Lay a sheet of nori on the mat, shiny side down. Wet your hands to prevent sticking, and spread a thin layer of sushi rice over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top.

5. Add Fillings

Place a line of imitation crab, avocado, and cucumber along the bottom edge of the rice-covered nori.

6. Roll the Sushi

Using the bamboo mat, roll the sushi away from you, pressing gently but firmly to keep the roll tight. Once rolled, use a sharp knife to slice the roll into bite-sized pieces, wiping the knife with a damp cloth between cuts.

7. Garnish and Serve

Sprinkle sesame seeds over the sliced rolls. Serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger on the side.
