Burger Patties

Method

Burger Patties

  1. 1

    Prepare the meat

Place the 1 lb ground beef in a large mixing bowl. Sprinkle in 2 tbs fine dry breadcrumbs, 2 tsp milk, 1 tsp salt, and 1 tsp black pepper.

  2. 2

    Mix gently

Using your hands or a fork, gently combine the ingredients until just mixed. Avoid overworking—stop when seasonings are evenly distributed and the meat holds together.

  3. 3

    Form patties

Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions (about 4 oz each). Shape each portion into a round patty about 3.5–4 inches in diameter and roughly 1/2-inch thick. Press a shallow dimple in the center of each patty with your thumb to help prevent puffing while cooking.

  4. 4

    Heat pan

Heat a large nonstick or cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add 1 tbs vegetable oil and swirl to coat the bottom.

  5. 5

    Cook patties

Place patties in the hot skillet, leaving space between them. Cook undisturbed for 3–4 minutes until a browned crust forms on the underside. Flip and continue cooking 2–4 minutes more for a medium doneness (adjust time for well-done or rarer as preferred).

  6. 6

    Add cheese (optional)

If using cheese, place a slice on each patty during the last 30–60 seconds of cooking. Cover the pan briefly or reduce heat to low so the cheese melts.

  7. 7

    Rest patties

Transfer patties to a plate and let rest for 2–3 minutes while you prepare buns and toppings.

Buns & Toppings

  1. 8

    Prepare buns

Split 4 small hamburger buns and spread about 1/4 tsp of softened butter on each cut side.

  2. 9

    Toast buns

Place buttered cut sides down in a skillet over medium heat (same skillet after patties or a separate pan) and toast until lightly golden, about 1–2 minutes. Remove from heat.

  3. 10

    Assemble burgers

On the bottom half of each toasted bun, place a small lettuce leaf and 2 pickle slices. Add one warm burger patty on top. Spoon 1 tsp ketchup and 1/2 tsp mustard onto the cheese or patty (adjust to taste). Top with the bun crown.

  4. 11

    Serve

Serve the kids hamburgers immediately while warm. Offer extra ketchup, pickles, or sliced fruit/veggie sides if desired.
