Method

Prepare and build

1

Chill glass (optional)

If you prefer a colder drink, place the old-fashioned glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill with ice and water while you prepare other items; discard the water before building the drink.

2

Add spirits

Place 4 large ice cubes into the chilled old-fashioned glass. Pour 1 oz Campari and 1 oz sweet vermouth over the ice using a jigger for accuracy.

3

Top with soda

Slowly top the spirit mixture with 2 oz (about 60 ml) club soda. Pour gently to retain some effervescence; adjust soda to taste if you prefer a lighter or stronger drink.

4

Stir gently

Using a bar spoon, stir the drink 6–8 revolutions (about 10–12 seconds) to combine the Campari, vermouth, and soda without over-diluting or losing carbonation.

5

Garnish and serve

Express the oils of an orange twist over the surface by holding the twist over the glass and giving it a quick squeeze, then rub the peel on the rim and drop it into the drink (or place an orange wheel on the rim). Serve immediately.

Notes

6

Variations: For a slightly different balance, try 1.25 oz sweet vermouth and 0.75 oz Campari, or substitute club soda with tonic for a slightly bitter-sweet profile. Use high-quality vermouth and fresh soda for best results.

7

Scaling: Multiply ingredient quantities proportionally for more servings. Keep the Campari:vermouth ratio 1:1 and adjust soda to preference.
