Method
Main
- 1
Prepare pan and measure
Lightly grease an 8x8-inch (20x20 cm) square baking pan or line it with parchment paper leaving an overhang for easy removal. Measure out 6 cups of Rice Krispies cereal and set aside.
- 2
Melt butter
In a large heavy-bottomed saucepan, melt 3 tablespoons unsalted butter over low to medium-low heat until fully melted and slightly foamy, about 1–2 minutes. Reduce heat to low to prevent scorching.
- 3
Add marshmallows
Add 6 cups mini marshmallows to the melted butter. Stir constantly with a heatproof spatula until marshmallows are completely melted and glossy, about 3–5 minutes. Keep the heat low so the marshmallows do not burn.
- 4
Finish marshmallow mixture
Remove the saucepan from heat. Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and a pinch of salt until incorporated.
- 5
Combine with cereal
Quickly add the 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal to the melted marshmallow mixture. Fold and stir gently but thoroughly with a greased spatula until the cereal is evenly coated. Work quickly while the mixture is still warm and pliable.
- 6
Transfer to pan and press
Transfer the coated cereal mixture to the prepared 8x8 pan. Lightly grease your hands or spray the spatula with nonstick spray, then press the mixture evenly into the pan. Press firmly but not so hard that the treats become overly dense — aim for uniform thickness about 1-inch (2.5 cm).
- 7
Cool
Allow the treats to cool at room temperature for at least 30 minutes to set. You can refrigerate for 10–15 minutes to speed this up, but avoid leaving them too long or they may become sticky from condensation when returned to room temperature.

Optional finish
- 9
Melt chocolate
If using chocolate, melt 1 cup chocolate chips or chopped chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl in 20–30 second bursts, stirring between bursts until smooth, or melt gently over a double boiler.
- 10
Decorate
Drizzle or spread the melted chocolate over the cut squares or over the entire slab before cutting. While the chocolate is still wet, sprinkle 2 tablespoons sprinkles if desired. Let chocolate set at room temperature or chill briefly until firm.
