Method
Table preparation
- 1
Clean and set foundation
Clear the table surface and wipe it clean. If using a tablecloth or runner, lay it flat and remove any wrinkles. Position placemats or charger plates centered at each seat, spacing chairs evenly so each place setting has roughly 24 inches (60 cm) of table width.
- 2
Place the dinner plate
Set a dinner plate in the center of each placemat or charger plate, about 1 inch (2–3 cm) from the edge of the table.
- 3
Stack salad plate and bowl
If serving a salad course, place the salad plate on top of the dinner plate. If serving soup first, place the soup bowl on top of the salad plate (or directly on the dinner plate if not using a salad plate). Ensure stacked pieces are centered.
- 4
Arrange flatware (basic formal)
Place the dinner fork to the left of the plate and the salad fork to its left (salad fork outermost if salad served first). Place the dinner knife to the right of the plate with the blade facing the plate. Place the soup spoon to the right of the knife. Place the teaspoon horizontally above the plate if a dessert utensil is needed, or to the right of the soup spoon for casual settings.
- 5
Place glassware
Set the water glass directly above the dinner knife. If serving wine, place the wine glass slightly to the right and down from the water glass (diagonally above the knife area). For multiple wines, arrange glasses in the order they will be used (white closer to the diner, red slightly farther).
- 6
Add napkins and bread plate
Fold the napkin neatly and place it to the left of the forks, under the forks, or on top of the dinner plate according to your style. If using bread plates, set them above the forks, slightly to the left; place the butter knife horizontally across the bread plate with blade facing left.
- 7
Set serving pieces
Place serving platter(s) and bowl(s) in the center of the table within easy reach. Arrange serving utensils in or beside the serving pieces. If food is to remain in the kitchen until serving, leave empty space in the center and bring platters out just before the meal is served.
- 8
Add finishing touches
Position the centerpiece so it doesn’t block sightlines—low and narrow is best. Add salt and pepper shakers, additional condiments, and place cards if used. Double-check spacing and symmetry across place settings.
Practical tips and variations

- 10
- 11
Space-saving: If table space is limited, bring out courses from the kitchen rather than placing all serving pieces on the table at once. Use a sideboard or nearby counter to stage dishes.
- 12
Child-friendly: For children, use unbreakable plates and cups. Reduce the number of utensils to one fork and one spoon, and leave extra napkins within reach.
