Brewed Coffee

Additions (optional)

Method

Brewed Coffee

  1. 1

    Measure beans

Weigh or measure 0.06 cups (approximately 10 grams) of whole coffee beans per 8 fl oz (0.5 cups) cup of brewed coffee. Adjust amount to taste if you prefer stronger or weaker coffee.

  2. 2

    Grind

Grind the beans to a consistency appropriate for your brewing method: medium-fine for pour-over, coarse for French press, medium for drip. Grind immediately before brewing for best flavor.

  3. 3

    Heat water

Heat 0.5 cups (120 ml) of filtered water to 195–205°F (90–96°C). If you don't have a thermometer, bring to a boil and let sit 30 seconds.

  4. 4

Bloom (for pour-over and similar methods)

Place the grounds in your filter or brewer. Pour about 0.02 cups (approximately 30–40 ml) of hot water evenly over the grounds to saturate. Let bloom for 30–45 seconds to release trapped CO2.

  5. 5

    Brew

Continue pouring or finish the brewing cycle with the remaining hot water, aiming for a total brew time appropriate to your method: 2.5–3.5 minutes for pour-over, 3–4 minutes for drip, 4 minutes for French press. Ensure all grounds are evenly saturated and allow extraction to complete.

  6. 6

    Serve

Remove the brewer or press the plunger (for French press). Pour the brewed coffee into your cup.

Additions (optional)

  1. 7

If desired, add up to 0.25 cups (60 ml) milk or milk alternative to make a latte-style drink. Warm the milk separately if preferred. Stir in 1 teaspoon simple syrup or sugar and a pinch of salt to taste. Adjust amounts to preference.

Equipment (not edible)

  1. 8

Use a grinder to grind beans and a kettle to heat water. Use a scale to measure beans and water for consistency. Clean equipment after use.
