Cold Brew Concentrate
To Serve (per 8 fl oz serving)
Equipment
Method
Cold Brew Concentrate
Measure and combine
Add 1 cup coarsely ground coffee to the large jar or pitcher. Pour 4 cups cold filtered water over the grounds, ensuring all grounds are saturated. Stir gently with a spoon to make sure there are no dry pockets.
Steep
Cover the jar or pitcher with a lid or plastic wrap. Let the coffee steep at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 16 to 20 hours. Longer steeping (up to 24 hours) yields a stronger, more concentrated brew; shorter (12–14 hours) will be milder.
Initial strain
After steeping, position a fine mesh sieve lined with a coffee filter or a double layer of cheesecloth over a large bowl or second pitcher. Slowly pour the steeped coffee and grounds through the sieve to catch the majority of the grounds. Allow the liquid to pass through; do not press the grounds.
Fine filtering
For a clearer concentrate, filter the strained liquid again through a fresh coffee filter or a very fine mesh. This step removes fine sediment and produces a smoother cup. Transfer the filtered cold brew concentrate back into a clean jar or bottle and refrigerate. Concentrate will keep well refrigerated for up to 10 days; best within 5 days.
To Serve (per 8 fl oz serving)
Fill a glass with 1 cup (about 1 cup) of ice.
Pour 3 fl oz (about 1/4 cup) cold brew concentrate over the ice.
Top with 5 fl oz cold water or milk (adjust ratio to taste). Stir gently to combine.
If desired, add 1 tsp simple syrup, honey, or sugar and stir until dissolved. For a creamier drink, float or stir in 1 tbsp milk foam or cream.
Taste and adjust: add more water/milk to dilute, or more concentrate for stronger flavor. Serve immediately.
Notes & Variations
Strength: The recipe above makes a concentrate at roughly a 1:4 coffee-to-water ratio by volume. For a stronger concentrate, use a 1:3 ratio; for a lighter concentrate, use 1:5.
Cold brew can be flavored by adding a vanilla bean, cinnamon stick, or orange peel during steeping (remove before filtering).
Simple syrup: combine equal parts sugar and hot water until dissolved; cool before adding to cold brew.
