Ice Cream Base

Method

Ice Cream Base

  1. 1

    Combine liquids

In a medium bowl, whisk together 1 cup whole milk, 1 cup heavy cream, 1 tablespoon granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt until the sugar is mostly dissolved and mixture is uniform.

  2. 2

    Chill mixture (if making homemade)

Cover the bowl and refrigerate the mixture for at least 1 hour, or until thoroughly chilled. Chilling helps the mixture freeze faster and yields creamier texture.

  3. 3

Freeze in ice cream maker (optional)

If you are making homemade ice cream, pour the chilled mixture into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer's instructions until it reaches soft-serve consistency (typically 20–30 minutes). Transfer to a shallow container and freeze for 2–4 hours for scoopable texture. If using store-bought ice cream, skip to Serving & Garnish.

Serving & Garnish

  1. 4

    Scoop

Remove ice cream (homemade from freezer or store-bought) from the freezer about 5 minutes before serving to soften slightly for easy scooping. Use an ice cream scoop or large spoon to portion 1 scoop per child (4 scoops total for recipe serving size).

  2. 5

    Plate

Place each scoop in a small dessert bowl or on a child-sized plate. If using cones or wafer cookies, insert or place beside the scoop.

  3. 6

    Garnish (optional)

Drizzle up to 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup evenly over the scoops, and sprinkle about 1 tablespoon of sprinkles across the servings if desired.

  4. 7

    Serve

Serve immediately. Leftover homemade ice cream can be stored in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 2 weeks.
