Coffee base

Method

Coffee base

1

Brew espresso or strong coffee

Pull two shots of espresso (about 2 fl oz total) using an espresso machine. If you don’t have an espresso machine, brew 2 fl oz of strong coffee using an Aeropress, Moka pot, or concentrated drip method.

2

Prepare hot water

Heat about 4 oz (120 ml) of water to just off boiling (about 90–96°C / 195–205°F).

3

Combine the hot water and espresso: pour the hot water into a 10–12 oz cup, then add the espresso shots. This order (water first, espresso second) preserves crema less, but many prefer adding espresso to water for a classic Americano — choose your preference. Stir gently to combine.

Milk

4

Steam or heat milk

Steam 4 oz of whole milk until it reaches about 60–65°C (140–149°F) and has a silky texture. If you don’t have a steamer, heat the milk on the stovetop until hot but not boiling (~140°F/60°C) and whisk vigorously to introduce a little foam.

5

Add milk to Americano (misto)

Pour the steamed/hot milk into the prepared Americano (hot water + espresso) — this creates an Americano Misto (similar to a cafe misto). If you made foam, spoon about 1 tablespoon of milk foam on top.

Sweetener & finishing

6

Sweeten to taste: stir in 1 tsp simple syrup (or other sweetener) until dissolved. Adjust amount as desired.

7

Garnish: optionally dust the top with a pinch (~1/4 tsp) of cocoa powder or ground cinnamon for aroma and presentation.

8

Serve immediately while hot.
