Build the drink

Fill a rocks glass (old fashioned glass) with ice — either a few large cubes or crushed ice to just below the rim.

Add spirits

Pour 1 oz Campari and 1 oz sweet vermouth over the ice.

Top with soda

Gently top with about 2 oz (or to taste) chilled soda water. Pour slowly over the back of a spoon or down the side of the glass if you prefer a gentler mix and more effervescence.

Stir

Give the drink one or two gentle short stirs to combine the Campari, vermouth, and soda without flattening the bubbles.

Garnish and serve

Express the oils of an orange twist over the glass by holding the twist skin-side down and giving it a quick snap, then drop the twist or a thin orange slice into the drink. Serve immediately with a short cocktail spoon or straw if desired.
