Method
Brew
Measure and heat
Measure 0.5 cups (about 40–45 g) coarsely ground coffee for a 4-cup batch. Heat 4 cups (about 950 ml) of water to between 195°F and 205°F (just off a rolling boil).
Prepare brewer
If using a drip coffee maker, place a paper filter (or reusable filter) in the basket and add the ground coffee. If using a French press, add the grounds to the empty press. For a pour-over, place the filter and grounds in the dripper.
Bloom and pour
For pour-over or French press: pour about 1/2 cup hot water evenly over the grounds to saturate them and let bloom for 30–45 seconds. Then pour the remaining water slowly and evenly over the grounds. For a drip maker, start the brew cycle and let it run.
Steep or brew time
If using a French press, place the plunger assembly on top but do not press; steep for 4 minutes total, then press slowly. Pour-over and drip methods will finish as you pour or cycle; expect total contact time around 3–4 minutes.
Serve
Immediately transfer the brewed coffee to a carafe or mugs to prevent over-extraction on a hot plate. Taste and adjust.
Customize and finish
Add milk or cream to taste (start with 1/4 cup per 4 cups brewed if serving multiple people). Stir in sugar or sweetener one teaspoon at a time until desired sweetness is reached. If using flavored syrup, add 1 tablespoon per cup or to taste and stir well.
For decaf: use decaffeinated coffee grounds in the same proportions and follow the same brewing steps.
