Method
Negroni
Chill glass
If desired, place the old fashioned glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice and water while you assemble the cocktail to chill the glass.
Measure spirits
Using a jigger, measure 1 oz gin, 1 oz Campari, and 1 oz sweet vermouth and pour them into the mixing glass.
Add ice
Add 5–6 large ice cubes to the mixing glass so the liquid is well covered. Larger cubes melt slower and produce less dilution.
Prepare garnish
While stirring or immediately after, use a vegetable peeler or knife to cut a 1–2 inch (2.5–5 cm) strip of orange peel. Trim any pith so you have a clean aromatic peel.
Strain and serve
Discard the ice/water from the chilled old fashioned glass if you used it to chill. Add a fresh large ice cube (or 1–2 cubes) to the glass. Using a strainer, pour the stirred cocktail from the mixing glass into the serving glass over the ice.
Serve immediately. Encourage the drinker to sip slowly to appreciate the bittersweet balance of gin, Campari, and vermouth.
Optional: Build in glass (no stirring)
If you prefer a simpler method, add ice to the serving glass, pour 1 oz gin, 1 oz Campari, and 1 oz sweet vermouth directly into the glass, stir briefly with a bar spoon to combine, then express and drop the orange peel as described above.
