Cocktail

Method

Make the Cocktail

1

Combine ingredients

Add Wild Turkey 101 bourbon (1.5 oz), Montelobos mezcal (0.5 oz), fresh lemon juice (0.75 oz), Aperol (0.5 oz), Amaro Nonino (0.25 oz) and simple syrup (0.25 oz) into a cocktail shaker.

2

Add ice

Fill the shaker with 4 large ice cubes (enough to chill and dilute properly).

3

Shake

Seal and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the shaker is well chilled and slightly frosted. This both chills and dilutes the drink to balance the spirits and citrus.

4

Prepare glass

If desired, chill an old-fashioned or coupe glass by filling it with ice water while you shake, then discard the ice water before straining.

5

Double strain

Double-strain the cocktail (using the shaker's strainer and a fine mesh strainer) into the chilled glass over one large ice cube or serve neat in a coupe, depending on preference.

6

Optional smoke or express oils

If using a flamed orange peel, hold the peel over the drink, twist to express oils and quickly pass the flame across the expressed oils to lightly char them, then drop the peel in or discard. Alternatively, lightly sprinkle a pinch of smoked sea salt on top for a savory highlight.

7

Garnish

Finish with a single lemon twist: express the oils over the drink and set it on the rim or float it on top.

8

Serve

Serve immediately. Sip to appreciate the interplay of robust bourbon, smoky mezcal, bitter-sweet Aperol and herbal Amaro Nonino balanced by bright lemon and touch of syrup.
