Method

Main

1

Rinse rice

Place the 1.5 cups of rice in a fine-mesh sieve or bowl and rinse under cold running water until the water runs mostly clear (about 30–60 seconds). This removes surface starch and prevents clumping.

2

Measure water and season

Combine 2.25 cups water and 1/2 tsp salt in a medium saucepan (with a tight-fitting lid). Add 1 tablespoon unsalted butter to the pot.

3

Bring to a simmer

Bring the water, salt, and butter to a gentle boil over medium-high heat. Once it reaches a boil, add the rinsed rice and stir once to distribute. Return to a gentle boil.

4

Cook covered

Reduce heat to low so the pot maintains a gentle simmer with no vigorous bubbling. Cover tightly and cook undisturbed for 15 minutes. Do not lift the lid during this time.

5

Rest and fluff

After 15 minutes, remove the pot from heat and keep the lid on. Let the rice rest, covered, for 10 minutes. Then remove the lid and use a fork to gently fluff the rice, separating the grains.

Optional flavor additions

6

Sauté garlic (optional)

If using garlic, heat 1 tsp olive oil in a small skillet over medium heat. Add 1 minced garlic clove and sauté for 30–45 seconds until fragrant but not browned. Remove from heat.

7

Finish rice with extras

Transfer the fluffed rice to a serving bowl. Stir in the sautéed garlic and oil (if used), 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley, 1/4 tsp black pepper, and 1/2 tsp citrus zest for brightness. Adjust salt to taste and serve warm.
