Seasoned Long-Grain White Rice
Method
Seasoned Long-Grain White Rice
Rinse and Prepare
Place 1 cup long-grain white rice in a fine-mesh sieve and rinse under cold running water until the water runs mostly clear (about 30–45 seconds). Drain well. Rinsing removes excess surface starch and helps grains stay separate.
Sauté Aromatics and Toast Rice
In a medium saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, heat 1 tsp vegetable oil and 1 tbsp unsalted butter over medium heat until the butter foams. Add 1/4 cup finely diced yellow onion and sauté 2–3 minutes until softened and translucent. Add 1 minced garlic clove and sauté 20–30 seconds until fragrant, taking care not to brown. Add the drained rice and stir frequently for 1–2 minutes so the rice is well coated with fat and warmed — this toasts the grains slightly and improves texture.
Add Liquid and Seasonings
Pour in 2 cups low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth, then add 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp black pepper, and 1 tsp dried parsley. Stir once to combine and bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium-high heat.
Simmer Covered
When it reaches a gentle boil, immediately reduce heat to low so the liquid is simmering very gently. Cover the saucepan with the lid and simmer undisturbed for 15 minutes. Do not lift the lid during this time — keeping the steam in is important for even cooking.
Steam Off Heat
After 15 minutes, remove the pan from heat but keep it covered. Let the rice steam for an additional 5–10 minutes (5 minutes for firmer grains, up to 10 for softer) without removing the lid.
Fluff and Finish
Remove the lid and use a fork to gently fluff the rice, separating the grains. Stir in optional 1/2 tsp fresh lemon zest if using for brightness and adjust seasoning to taste (add up to 1/4 tsp extra salt if needed). Taste and add additional black pepper if desired.
Serve
Transfer to a warm side-dish bowl or plate and serve immediately alongside your main course. This yields a light, seasoned side of rice with separate, fluffy grains.
