Cocktail

1

Prepare glass

Select a chilled or room-temperature shot glass (about 1.5–2 oz / 45–60 ml). A standard B-52 is served in a clear shot glass so the layers are visible.

2

Layer coffee liqueur

Pour 1 tablespoon (approximately 15 ml) of coffee liqueur into the bottom of the shot glass. Ensure the surface is level and steady the glass on a flat surface.

3

Layer Irish cream

Using the back of a bar spoon or a teaspoon held just above the coffee liqueur, slowly pour 1 tablespoon (≈15 ml) of Irish cream liqueur over the spoon so it gently floats on top of the coffee liqueur. Pour slowly and steadily to form a distinct middle layer.

4

Layer orange liqueur

Again using the back of the spoon held just above the Irish cream layer, slowly pour 1 tablespoon (≈15 ml) of Grand Marnier (or other orange liqueur) so it floats on top and forms the third layer. The three layers should remain separate: coffee liqueur (bottom), Irish cream (middle), orange liqueur (top).

5

Garnish (optional)

If desired, grate a small amount of orange zest over the top or place a single coffee bean on the surface for presentation.

Serving & variations

6

Serve immediately as an after-dinner shot. The classic B-52 can be served as-is, or warmed and flambéed (not recommended without training). To flambé: warm the top liqueur slightly and ignite briefly, then extinguish before drinking — this is potentially dangerous and should only be done by experienced bartenders.

7

Variations: Replace Grand Marnier with triple sec for a slightly different orange profile, or use a flavored coffee liqueur for variations in sweetness and aroma.
