Method

Cake Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, and cocoa powder. Whisk together until well combined.

  3. 3

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, whisk together the milk, vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and red food coloring until smooth.

  4. 4

    Combine Both Mixtures

Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring gently until just combined. Do not overmix.

  5. 5

    Add Buttermilk

Stir in the buttermilk until the mixture is smooth and uniform.

  6. 6

    Bake the Cakes

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  7. 7

    Cool the Cakes

Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.

Frosting Preparation

  1. 8

    Mix Cream Cheese Frosting

In a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese and unsalted butter together until smooth and creamy.

  2. 9

    Add Sugar and Vanilla

Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing on low speed to prevent a sugar cloud. Once incorporated, add the vanilla extract and beat until fluffy.

  3. 10

    Frost the Cake

Place one layer of the cooled red velvet cake on a serving plate. Spread a layer of cream cheese frosting on top. Place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
